Dermal fillers can be used to restore the lost volume of the face or to treat facial wrinkles and folds. It can also be used in facial sculpting and contouring.

Be sure to choose an injector who reviews the risks and benefits of fillers and other procedures with you. Adverse events rarely happen but are possible. Ask your injector about how they are reducing the risk of any adverse events.

RHA Line of fillers

Hyaluronic acid is found naturally throughout the body. In the skin hyaluronic acid attracts water, which allows the skin to become more hydrated. As we age, the fat, muscles, bone, and skin in our face begins to thin. This loss of volume leads to either sunken or sagging appearance of the face, fine lines, wrinkles, folds, and thin lips. Injectable HA is used to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, facial folds, and to create structure, framework, and volume to the face and lips. the effects of injectable hyaluronic acid are seen immediately. Outcomes and longevity vary from person to person and are influenced by the location of product, the individual properties of the HA filler, the age of the client, and the individual characteristics of the clients skin.

ANAESTHETIC EFFECT: Numbness or tingling immediately after the procedure

INFLAMMATION: Moderate swelling, redness, mild tenderness for 2-3 days, with mild swelling for up to 2 weeks. (The product takes about two weeks to integrate into the tissue.)

BRUSING: Usually visible initially, then more obvious the next day before fading over 7-14 days. Rarely a large bruise can last for 4-6 weeks.

  • For 48 hours you should avoid exposure to UV light and heat i.e. sauna, steam, sunbeds, hot showers, strenuous exercise etc. as this may increase discomfort and swelling.
  • Keep the area cool with a cold compress, but don’t apply ice which can cause injury. (Ice should never be placed directly on skin)
  • Try to avoid unnecessary pressure over any areas treated, especially in the first 24 hours.
  • Avoid facial massage or skin resurfacing until the area has healed fully.

Reduce the risk of infection and reaction by not touching the area for 6 hours. Do not apply make-up or lipstick over injection points until the day after the procedure. Try not to lick your lips for the first 2 hours.

Swelling, puffiness or lumpiness which does not fade or gets worse in the first week should be reviewed by your clinician. Filler which becomes hard, nodular or lumpy, especially if there is redness or tenderness after 48 hours may be a sign of reaction or infection, and you may need medical assistance from your clinician or family doctor only if you are unable to see us.

Signs of vascular injury include an area of pale skin immediately after the procedure, a blotchy or mottles pattern and then blue/grey darkening of skin over time. Alongside this, symptoms of increasing pain over time especially in the first 24 hours occur. Examination of the blood flow by a clinician may confirm the diagnosis. Please act fast if you suspect this.

Recent ultrasound evidence has shown that in many people filler actually lasts much longer than the typical 6-12 months advised by manufacturers. This can be a good thing, but it’s important to understand some of the down sides so you can maintain optimum results throughout your life.

There is known potential for filler to diffuse or migrate around the original injection site. The result is usually a subtle loss of definition which happens slowly over time, but with repeated treatments over years a more significant progressive loss of definition or over treatment may occur slowly over time.

Your injector will work har to optimise placement and product choice to limit the risk of migration, but you can also protect the result by avoiding unnecessary massaging or any habits that may over time affect the product. You should not have to live your life around the product, all normal activity is fine, but be aware of habitually exerting pressure on the treated area.

Your clinician is trained to monitor you each visit to look for signs of migration as part of each assessment. If they see an issue developing they may discuss with you the option of reversing the older product before doing a new procedure. The goal is to maintain crisp definition, beautiful angles and details as well as volume.

It may be required for a small percentage of people to have filler dissolved. The process is a simple procedure using an enzyme which breaks down filler into simple sugars which leave the tissues, and will allow you to have a fresh treatment in two weeks.
